Founder, Complete Concussion Management & The Concussion Fix

In a few words... for the last decade, I have devoted both my clinical practice and my research focus to concussion and the treatment of lingering concussion symptoms.

Nothing else!

Throughout my entire education, we were always taught that there is nothing that can be done for concussion - except to rest and give it time...

In my post-doctorate program, I chose to focus my specialization on concussion and persistent concussion symptoms. I was amazed to learn that not only was rest not helpful...it was actually harmful! Patients who were told to rest and wait to get better never actually did. On the flip-side, patients who were given guidance and structured active rehabilitation did!

At the time (more than 10 years ago), we were just scratching the surface, I could tell even then that we were on to something big. It is at that point that

...I Decided to dedicate my life to solving the PCS problem

It takes roughly 15 to 20 years for the latest research to make it into general practice. This means that the things we know right now, won't be provided to the average concussion patient until after 2035!

I certainly wouldn't want to wait that long to be given the right information!

This is why patients are still told that there is "no treatment for concussion" or that "all you can do is wait it out" or "get used to it, this is your new normal".

This is BS!!

Over the past 10 years I have worked with thousands of patients in my Toronto office.

What I have learned is that most gains that patients make are not from what I DO to them, but rather from what I TEACH them. Concussion recovery does not require fancy equipment or machines or lasers or pills.

Instead, concussion recovery involves doing things in your day to day life that "hack" your systems.

This concept became even more apparent when Covid hit and everything went virtual. I learned that by just teaching people things that they could do in their own homes, they recovered just as well!

The Concussion fix program was born

We combined leading scientific research across various domains into a unified program that patients can complete on their own from anywhere in the world.

But, concussion can be extremely isolating, so the program is also a recovery support group, where patients are able to connect with other PCS survivors from all over the world!

Patients receive the education they need for empowerment, the guidance they need for self-assurance, and the support system they need for consistency, accountability, empathy, and recovery.

What's Inside?

Will this really work for ME?

This program has been shown to be very effective at helping patients reduce their persistent concussion symptoms. In order to understand how this program is helpful, you must first understand the 5 universal causes for persistent concussion symptoms.

When you find which cause or combination of causes is responsible for your persistent symptoms, you can reduce and eliminate them. Here's a look at the 5 main causes:

This is the system that controls our heart rate, our breathing, our digestion, and, importantly, our blood flow. Normally this system is in balance between our sympathetic system (fight or flight) and our parasympathetic system (rest & digest). Concussion causes a major disruption in this balance.

Often this imbalance shows up when we increase our activity levels. We may feel fine at rest, but as soon as we try to exercise, or go back to work, or do anything active, our symptoms reappear.

Concussion results in an inflammatory response in the brain. Depending on a variety of factors, this process can linger for weeks to months or even years in patients with chronic symptoms.

This process is mediated by our gut health and the foods we eat through a connection with our brain known as the "Gut-Brain Axis". This can cause symptoms like fatigue, mental fogginess, sleep difficulties, headaches, and more. You may have noticed digestive problems and even food sensitivities since your injury. This is one tell-tale sign that inflammation could be driving your symptoms.

After injury, our eyes don’t work together the way they should and our balance mechanisms sometimes give us the wrong information.

The net result is cognitive problems, trouble concentrating, dizziness, anxiety, headaches, trouble following a conversation, problems with motion or hanging out in crowds or busy environments. The good news is that these things can be fixed by retraining the system!

The head and neck are connected. Concussion results from the brain undergoing a quick acceleration or deceleration. Whiplash injury to the neck is caused from a quick acceleration or deceleration of the neck. Whenever there is concussion, there is simultaneously an injury to the neck.

The symptoms of neck injury COMPLETELY mimic those of concussion. These two injuries literally look identical. So when patients are having symptoms they think relate to ongoing concussion, it’s often actually ongoing neck injury! Fix the neck dysfunction and your symptoms completely resolve.

Concussion recovery is difficult. We become isolated from our careers, our friends, and our loved ones. We are told that there's nothing we can do and we feel like absolute crap. This all can take a psychological toll on you. Increased anxiety and depression can also mimic the symptoms of concussion --> Fatigue, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, etc.

To make matters worse, having depression and/or anxiety is a barrier to concussion recovery. So in order to recover, no matter what, you have to work on your mental health and get your mindset right for recovery.

To recover from your concussion, these 5 causes have to be addressed.

If you haven’t healed yet, despite appointments with countless specialists, this is why:
The approach has been too narrow, too unsystematic.

A BETTER APPROACH.

A holistic approach, one that identifies which cause or combination of causes is responsible for your persistent concussion symptoms, and that addresses these symptoms through education and active treatment, is the approach you need to recover.

For the best results things have to be done in the correct order. If you don't build your foundation properly, you will continue to experience constant setbacks and frustration.

We call this the Concussion Recovery Pyramid

The Concussion Recovery Pyramid involves starting at the bottom and gradually adding more skills as the foundation gets built. Too many patients go straight for the top: Rehab. If you haven't balanced your nervous system, reduced your inflammation, or fixed your blood flow, rehab will likely fail.

This is why the average concussion patient spends between $15,000 - $20,000 on treatments that do not work!

The Concussion Fix program teaches patients how to build out a STRONG foundation to recover for good!

Can this be done online?

Yes, it can, and for a fraction of the cost! It's all about simply learning the strategies and implementing them. In fact, the average member in the Concussion Fix program reduces their concussion symptoms by 50% within the first 3 weeks of joining!

So, will this work for me?

Based on the science, there is a very strong likelihood that this program will help you to significantly reduce your symptoms by helping you to build up a strong foundation. Just as it has for thousands of others before you!

Course Outline!

Full RECOVERY is Possible!
You just need to know where to start

  • What is a concussion?
  • What does it do to the brain?
  • Why do you feel the way that you feel?
  • In this module we explore the science of concussion to learn what is happening inside your brain during and after a concussion injury

There are 5 main causes of persistent concussion symptoms.  This module explains each one and begins to formulate our game plan for recovery!

In order to recover, you have to be in the right mindset.  Recovery is difficult.  Things get hard.  In order to persevere, the most important building block is mindset.  In this module, Registered Psychotherapist, Melinda Krynen-Hill provides you practical tools and applications to prime you for recovery!

You are what you eat!  This is true especially when it comes to brain injury thanks to a system called the Gut-Brain Axis.  In this module Dr. Paul Hrkal, ND, breaks down how you can alter your diet to reduce inflammation, improve your sleep, and regulate your hormones.

One of the most important, and most underappreciated things that we can do to optimize our health, reduce our inflammation, and regulate our hormones is getting proper restorative sleep.  Unfortunately, sleep is heavily affected after concussion injuries!  This module will teach you how to naturally get your sleep back on track.

We are now learning that concussions can have a significant impact on your hormone levels.  Hormones regulate almost every process in your body and when these are out of whack, the symptoms are exactly the same as concussion!  Low energy, mental fatigue, headaches, anxiety, etc.  This module will cover the role that hormones and stress can play on your recovery and give you practical strategies for improving their balance!

Exercise is one of the best forms of treatment for persistent concussion symptoms…but it has to be done in the right way.  Do too much and you can set yourself back.  Don’t do enough and you miss the therapeutic benefit.  This module will teach you exactly how to safely build up your exercise tolerance without doing too much and setting yourself back.

This module explores the vestibular (balance) system and visual system and their symbiotic relationship.  This module will help to figure out which system(s) is/are causing your dizziness and visual symptoms and provide practical strategies to fix the issues!

Every concussion also comes with a neck injury.  The symptoms of neck injury and neck dysfunction are the exact same as a concussion.  Often times, by fixing the neck, you can completely eliminate what you thought were concussion symptoms!  We show you how to improve your neck mobility and stability in order decrease your headaches and dizziness.

80% of patients are likely to make a significant recovery with the Concussion Fix course and your current healthcare treatment!  Some will need to seek additional care but… What type of treatment do you need?  What should you be looking for in a healthcare provider? We teach you what to look for and what to not waste your time (or money $) on!

FAQ's

Do I need the supervision of a doctor to take this course?

You do not require a doctor or healthcare provider to oversee your progress through this course, however you should not engage in the activities within this course without first consulting with your doctor.  This course is meant to provide general information and does not replace your healthcare provider.

Do you become our doctor If I take this course?

Enrolment in this course does not constitute a doctor patient relationship between you and any of the instructors within this course.  This course is meant for educational purposes only to provide an evidence-based approach and outline for a typical program of care.  Certain patients have nuances to their individual situation that would not be possible for the clinicians to accurately assess in a virtual care platform.

How Can I take this course if I can't look at screens?

Although screen sensitivity is a common symptom following concussion, there is no evidence to suggest that looking at screens is harmful to recovery or will cause any negative effect.  We recommend reducing the brightness of your screen if need be or listening to the audio.  The best option however is to gradually increase your screen viewing throughout the course as this is also a form of therapy!

How long will I have access to the course and materials?

This course also includes the Concussion Fix community and support group.  You can keep access to the material for as long as you like for less than the cost of your daily coffee!  This course is meant to be an encyclopedia; a reference to refer back to whenever you need!

If I take this course, can i/should I stop seeing my other healthcare providers?

No!  This course is not meant to replace your healthcare providers, but rather to support your current care.

Can I ask the instructors questions?

Yes!  They are here to help!  Unfortunately, due to medicolegal reasons, certain questions relating to your personal case cannot be answered by anyone other than your healthcare provider.

Can I take a part of the program?

We don’t allow people to take only portions of the program because what many people think are their issues are actually not their issues. So we have an all or none rule with the program to ensure its effectiveness. It’s also a problem because many PCS issues are intertwined and patients may feel that their symptoms are related to one specific area, but if they don’t address the other areas, treatment on that specific area will not be effective. So it’s important to really come at this from all angles! And that’s the approach we take.
